Construction Tour of the American Geophysical Union Net Zero Renovation

Presented by: Representatives of Hickok Cole Architects and Skanska USA

Co-Hosted with: BEC-Baltimore.

Description:

The American Geophysical Union (AGU) is currently undergoing a net zero renovation of its existing 62,000-square-foot headquarters building, located in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington DC. This tour will give an inside look at the construction process and allow attendees to hear about the design features included in the building that are key to energy recovery in the pursuit of AGU's net zero energy goal from project partners themselves. Tour talking points will include:

  • exterior envelope systems,

  • wet walls,

  • storm water tanks and water reuse,

  • solar photovoltaic array, and

  • interior Hy Phy Wall and radiant panels.

Please note: As this is a tour of an active construction site, personal hard-sole boots are required to attend. Additional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as hard hats, safety glasses, and vests, will be provided.

Learning Objectives:

After attending this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify a wide variety of building envelope systems at the American Geophysical Union;

  • Describe what a net zero energy site is and how it guided the design team for this project;

  • Discuss the design challenges of incorporating energy recovery design features into an existing building; and

  • Summarize the advantages associated with using solar photovoltaic arrays.
